ICYMI: Iowa Veterans and Union Workers Slam Hinson’s Response to Iran War

A new video from the Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO features veterans and union members who have had enough of Ashley Hinson’s votes to continue the war

Des Moines, IA – The Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO released a video of Iowa veterans and union workers from across the state denouncing Ashley Hinson’s recent comment that the Iran war she repeatedly voted to continue is “out of sight, out of mind” for Iowans.

The war might be “out of sight, out of mind,” for multi-millionaires like Ashley Hinson, but for everyday Iowans, the impacts have been brutal. Struggling under the weight of record high diesel and sky-high gas prices, the average Iowa family has paid an average of $516 more in gas alone since the war began while farmers are expecting to pay thousands more to harvest their crops this year. Iowans have been hammered by record-setting diesel and sky-high gas prices, and Ashley Hinson has accepted more than $200,000 from Big Oil raking in record profits due to the conflict.

As the video makes clear, Iowans won’t forget that Hinson voted seven times to continue the war in Iran and repeatedly downplayed the harm it has caused to Iowans.

“Ashley Hinson is completely out of touch with reality. We are thousands of miles away from Iran, sure, but every time anybody in Iowa goes to a gas pump, they know what’s happening in Iran. The fact that we lost service members over there — you know we’re not oblivious to what’s happening over there. That she would say something like that shows just how out of touch with reality that she really is,” said Justin Limke, a U.S. Army veteran from Des Moines and a member of United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 450.

“I don’t think she deserves to be a senator. She definitely doesn’t deserve to be a representative. She doesn’t even care about Iowans. What does she mean by ‘it’s a long way away, and we don’t even care about it?’ We do. We lost two service members, and they don’t even want to call it a war. I don’t understand this. She’s out of touch with the Iowans’ pocketbook, too,” said Tom Hayes, who served in the U.S. Army during Desert Storm and is a member of Laborers Local 177.

“Working Iowans don’t get to treat this war as out of sight, out of mind. Our members see it every time they fill up the tank, every time a farmer or trucker pays for diesel, and every time a military family waits for news from overseas. Ashley Hinson had many chances to vote to end this war, and she voted to keep it going every single time. Iowa workers and veterans deserve a leader who stands with them when it counts, not only when the polls turn,” said Charlie Wishman, Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO President.
