Iowa Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Josh Turek said Saturday that if he is elected to the seat, his focus will be on building relationships and doing what is best for Iowa and Iowans.

Turek spent Saturday in Muscatine and Davenport talking at meet and greets and knocking on doors.

“I’m willing to do the work behind the scenes and build relationships,” Turek told a crowd of about 45 people who gathered in the living room and dining areas of O’Donnell’s home to hear him speak.

“I’m willing to work hard to provide results and it should not matter if it’s a Republican idea or Democratic idea,” he said. “We need to work on policy and stop putting party above country. That’s what Tom Harkin did and that’s what I’ve done in the Legislature.”

Harkin, a Democrat who served as one of Iowa’s U.S. Senators between 1985 and 2015, has endorsed Turek in the race.

Coming off of his final debate before the primary and a key endorsement, state representative Josh Turek brought his campaign for the Democratic nomination for US Senate to north-central Iowa on Sunday with stops in Mason City and St. Ansgar.

Turek, a former paralympian who played wheelchair basketball for Team USA and won two gold medals, is the first permanently disabled member of the Iowa legislature and has called Harkin his “political hero” for his work in passing the Americans with Disabilities Act.

“It’s the one that meant the most to me personally. We’ve developed a real relationship, and as somebody that for 40 years dedicated his life to public service to the people here in Iowa, ten years in the House of Representatives, thirty years in the US Senate, fathered the Americans with Disabilities Act, really was out there championing healthcare issues, issues for the most vulnerable, for the people who can’t afford to make a political donation, this is exactly where I am at as well.”

“Events like this, you can see we’ve got looks like more than 100 people here on the front lawn,” Turek told Iowa’s News Now when asked what he can do between now and the primary to reach voters. “We’re going to make more than 30 stops here in the last few days.”

Turek says the primary boils down to “electability.”

“And I know on that issue, there’s really no comparison,” Turek said. “I come from the reddest district in all of the Iowa legislature. I come from a district, two communities that Trump won by 18 and by 10 points.”

Turek feeling optimistic as the primary nears.

“This is a once in a generation opportunity we’ve got here in Iowa to win Senator Harkin’s seat back and once again, have someone in the U.S. Senate that’s going to be fighting for them. Fighting for the middle class that is being hollowed out.”
