ICYMI: Millionaire Ashley Hinson’s Plan to Address Social Security Solvency: Millennials Should Save More (?) + Raise Retirement Age

“Hinson suggested she is open to phasing in an increase in the age – currently 62 – at which retirees become eligible to draw Social Security checks.”

DES MOINES — At last night’s U.S. Senate debate, Ashley Hinson made clear she will do nothing to protect Social Security for the more than 550,000 Iowa seniors who rely on it to survive.

In response to questions about ensuring Social Security’s solvency, Hinson, a millionaire, refused to commit to scrap the cap to ensure that everyone (including her) pays their fair share. Instead, she said her plan is to raise the retirement age and teach millennials how to save.

  • CNN: Hinson suggested she is open to phasing in an increase in the age – currently 62 – at which retirees become eligible to draw Social Security checks.
  • POLITICO: In a debate, the Iowa Republican candidate for Senate said millennials are “the worst group of savers” during a discussion about Social Security…“We also need to be talking about millennials saving money,” she later added. “Millennials are the worst group of savers in the country right now and have the least amount of savings. So those are ways where I think we can help have a bigger conversation around saving in general, planning for retirement and making sure we’re all able to experience a robust retirement.”

Reminder: Ashley Hinson has increased her wealth by up to $8 million in the six years she has been in Congress.

Can’t believe Hinson would take such an out of touch position? Watch for yourself:

Ashley Hinson: “We need to talk about Millennials saving money. Millennials are the worst group of savers in the country right now and have the last amount of savings.”
