RECAP: Josh Turek Visits Local Colfax on “Team Iowa Tour,” Discusses Impact of Medicaid Cuts, Rising Costs on Patients and Providers

At a local pharmacy in Colfax, Josh saw the real impact of Ashley Hinson’s votes to cut healthcare for Iowans

Des Moines, IA – Today, U.S. Senate candidate Josh Turek visited Spring City Pharmacy in Colfax, Iowa to discuss how Medicaid cuts and Washington’s inability to rein in Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBM) has impacted the ability for patients and providers to access and supply care, as well as how rising costs are affecting the operations of locally owned pharmacies.

Ashley Hinson’s votes to rip health care away from more than 110,000 Iowans has had ripple effects across Iowa’s entire health care system, including local pharmacies. While Hinson voted against capping the cost of prescription drugs for Iowa seniors and accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars from the pharmaceutical industry, Josh is committed to lowering the cost of life-saving prescription drugs and making health care more accessible.

At the pharmacy, Josh spoke with owner Brad Magg about the impact of high costs and Medicaid cuts on his pharmacy and in other locally-owned pharmacies across the state.

“My pharmacy has been in business for four years. We lost over $100,000 in our first year because of PBMs, and we’re still losing money on every standard prescription we fill – it’s even more when it’s a Medicaid prescription. The reimbursement rates are so low that we are losing as much as $100 to fill a prescription covered by Medicaid. We’re not asking to make a profit, we’re just trying to break even,” said Brad Magg.

“In the richest country on Earth, no one should have to question whether or not they’ll be able to access lifesaving medications because their local pharmacy has closed. In the U.S. Senate, I will fight for full reimbursements, to put guardrails on insurance companies, and for PBM reform because right now, Iowans are suffering while the pharmaceutical industry rakes in billions,” said Josh Turek.

From now until Election Day, Josh will continue his “go everywhere” approach to meet Iowans from across the political spectrum, taking the time to listen to folks about how corrupt politicians like Ashley Hinson have failed them and their communities.
